How Often Should You Water a Venus Flytrap?
Water a Venus flytrap often enough to keep its growing medium moist. There is no fixed weekly schedule: heat, sun, pot size, growing medium, and season all change how quickly it dries. Check the plant’s conditions before adding water.
What should I check?
- Medium: check that it is still moist. Do not wait for the whole root ball to become dry or the plant to wilt.
- Tray: a shallow water tray helps maintain moisture during active growth. The pot needs drainage holes. Keep the water well below the growing point; do not submerge the plant.
- Weather and season: check more often in hot, sunny, or windy conditions. A cooler, resting plant generally uses less water, so adjust the tray and refilling routine while keeping the medium moist.
As a practical starting habit, inspect it daily during warm weather. That is a checking routine, not an instruction to add water every day.

Which water is suitable?
Use clean rainwater, distilled water, or reverse-osmosis water. Water quality matters because dissolved minerals can accumulate in the growing medium.
Tap water varies. A household filter does not necessarily remove dissolved salts, and leaving water standing does not remove them. If you do not know your water’s mineral content, choose a known low-mineral source rather than guessing.
NC State: irrigation water; ICPS: dissolved salts and water treatment.
Can misting replace watering?
No. Wetting the leaves does not reliably moisten the root ball. Water the growing medium or use a suitable tray, and check moisture where the roots are.
If your plant keeps declining, review the whole setup. Light and growing medium matter too; black traps alone cannot tell you whether water is the cause.
